You were never a fighter, Dani-boy…

The whispered words held more truth than accusation, and she didn’t take them critically when Rico cupped the side of her face in his large hand and a thumb gently stroked her cheek. She wasn’t a fighter; Doug and Rico had fought her battles for her. When their parents died, Doug would claim they leaned on each other for support, but the truth was she needed her brother more than he needed her. Doug had his anger to fuel him. Without her twin, she would’ve lost herself in grief.

And why did she fight Rico now?

His hand dropped from her face, and he took in a deep breath. “I did know her a long time ago. She’s…” His gaze faltered and he colored. Was he embarrassed? “She’s connected to the case I’m working on.”

“Intimately connected is what it looks like.”

He shot her a tired look, but she didn’t take the words back. In fact, she was quickly losing interest in his explanation. There was no reason to argue about a girl who was texting him. He had every right to receive those texts and enjoy them without being monitored. She was nothing more than a friend to him, not his girlfriend.

Dani trembled at a new awareness that rapidly coursed through her body. A strange mix of emotions clouded her thinking. Irritation, jealousy, self-pity… She was a supermodel. Who was this girl who had slathered on cheap eye shadow, hooker-red lipstick, and some bad lingerie from a low-class department store? How had she won Rico’s affections ever — not just one period in time past — when Dani knew him better than most? And why hadn’t he blocked her number?

“It was a mistake. I was a lot younger back then and…stupid.”

“I’m not interested,” Dani said sharply. She marched toward the front door. “It’s late and I’m tired. I’d like to take a long bath and go to bed. Besides, you have a case to solve.” When she didn’t hear his footsteps behind her, she paused and looked over her shoulder. His hooded look struck her with a fear she’d only known once before: the night in Billy’s basement closet. But he wasn’t going to kiss her. He was merely angry that she had cut short his explanation. Get your stuff and leave!

As though he heard her thoughts, he tore his gaze from her and packed his laptop into the computer satchel. He violently slung it over his shoulder and his heavy steps echoed loudly as they thundered toward her. Her heart’s pace increased the longer his gaze held hers. In an effort to save herself from an impending aortic rupture, she broke their connection and continued to the front door. Her hand was barely on the knob when warmth encircled her waist. His arms were around her and they whirled her about to face him.

“There doesn’t seem to be any easy way to do this, so I’m just gonna go for it.”

He crushed his lips to hers. The momentous force backed her into the door.
